GREG’S TRUCKLOAD

Greg’s Truckload vol. 19
Hello Truckers. It’s looking a lot like springtime. The grass is green, the trees are blooming, and It’s raining, a lot. We are wrapping up spring break and heading into the opening week of Little League. I sure hope they built those fields to drain quickly. We will see soon enough. We were in Frankfort yesterday, and supposedly, a house went floating down the Kentucky River. I drove over to the American Whitewater property on the Elkhorn, where we had just put canoes in, last week at the beginning of spring break, and the entire property was underwater. I feel so badly for the people whose homes and businesses have been damaged and destroyed, and it is so widespread. Even thunder over Louisville has been canceled, and its economic impact is enormous. Once things get cleaned up and running, it will be very important that we all get out and spend money in the communities that have been affected by the flooding. It should be easy peasy as they are everywhere you look.
Speaking of Elkhorn Creek, it is a wonderful place to get out and play on the water with a canoe or kayak. Whether you are an expert or have never paddled before, Conoe Kentucky, is the place to go. They offer rentals and shuttles to multiple sections of the creek. Once you’ve fallen in love with the sport, they have a full shop to purchase all the gear you need. I’ve been going there for over 30 years, and it’s still the same building.
Another small business we recently visited was in the Red River Gorge. Red Point BBQ was outstanding. I can’t think of a single complaint. The service was friendly and attentive. The menu is creative and diverse. The atmosphere perfectly fits the outdoorsy, nature-oriented clientele who live in and visit the area. The meats were spot on, but one way I judge a BBQ restaurant is on its sides. I’ve seen many establishments think their meat is so good they can skimp the sides and buy Sysco potato salad, slaw, etc. The sides are just as important, and Redpoint does not disappoint. All were creative, fresh, and homemade. Another thing is you will not leave hungry. I’ve been known as Mr. Hollow Legs, but after eating here, I almost needed a nap to digest it. I couldn’t even think of ordering a dessert. They are currently expanding their outdoor seating, and for this alone, I will be back as it has a great view of the forest. There is even a disc golf course on location. If you plan to visit the gorge, put Redpoint BBQ on your agenda, as it’s the best meal in the area, and I’ve been staying here since I got my driver’s license in the early nineties. The best thing about the Red River Gorge is that after a big meal, there are many opportunities to burn off excess calories. Consider looking into a hike to Hansons Point or Rock Bridge.
Speaking of burning calories, my daily step count has been very inconsistent, as it coincides with the weather. The other day, I had 28,000 steps, and then the next, only 8,000. My daily goal is 10,000. I could stand to put on my raincoat and muck boots.
The weather is expected to be better than bad for next week’s garden plant swap and market next weekend at the 3rd Turn Brewery Oldham Gardens in Crestwood. I’m getting excited about this, as we now have over 20 vendors attending. The brewery will set up a bar in the market area, one of the old greenhouses from when Minnish and Potts owned the facility. I hoped the wisteria would bloom, but the cool weather has slowed its progress. I hope to see you there.
Before I go, thank you for your support in the derby burger challenge. I didn’t win, but I had fun trying and will return stronger next year. 4th isn’t so bad
I’m looking into bottling up and making my mop sauce available. It would be called the Trucker sauce. Of course, I will give you the recipe, and I’ve already described it in the YouTube videos, but some might want to make it easy and just buy a bottle. This is one of my attempts to stay true to my culinary background without putting the hours into a restaurant kitchen. Thanks for reading, and Keep on trucking.
